You probably don’t think twice when you light a scented candle, or when you break out the mop to polish your hardwood bedroom floors. But there are some surprisingly harmful chemicals in many seemingly innocent household products. Volatile Organic Compounds, or VOCs, can be up to ten times more harmful indoors than out, especially for children. Which VOCs are lurking in your bedroom?
Acetone is one of the most common VOCs, and it can be found in the wallpaper on your bedroom walls as well as in the furniture polish you use to keep everything looking its best. Luckily, there are water-based substitutes that can get the job done; you just have to be aware of them and seek them out. Butanal is another common VOC. In your bedroom, it’s most likely to be found in burning candles. Sticking to beeswax, soy-based, and cotton-wicked candles will keep you safe, though. Finally, there’s dichlorobenzene, the number one reason why shouldn’t keep mothballs around the house. Instead, use cedar chips, airtight containers, or garment bags. Lavender will also go a long way toward protecting your clothing from moths. Be sure to check out the link below to learn more about these potentially harmful chemicals!
