Let’s face it: the average American’s day is mostly spent staring at screens. Whether it’s a laptop, phone, tablet, or TV, we’ve become disconnected from the world around us. That’s why you should turn your bedroom into a place to reconnect by incorporating design elements that engage each of the five senses. You’re sure to find yourself more relaxed if you do.
The sense of touch is the perfect antidote to a world filled with screens and visual information. Add a deep pile rug to the floor beneath your bed so it’s first thing you feel every morning, or use sheets and blankets with unique textures on them in your bed to engage your sense of touch. Your sense of sight is usually bombarded with bright lights and advertisements, so slow it down with some artwork or fascinating textures on your bedroom walls. A large window looking out on the world is also a great antidote. And your sense of smell will thank you if you burn a candle in your room now and again, or add some plants to both purify the air and perfume it with their flowers.
