Katherine Anne Lewis of North Carolina has studied the art of feng shui under three grand masters and has been running her LA-based consultancy for a decade. She believes a bedroom needs to be a place you love being in, not a solely functional room designed simply for sleep and storage. A well-designed room can even provide you with a better night’s sleep!
Lewis advises you to keep the space under and around your bed as clear as possible. Extra luggage, paperwork, and other things many people store in their bedrooms can cause stress, as can mess. She also suggests you fill your room with restful colors like pastels, greens, and blues. Reds, oranges, and other bold colors can energize the body and make it difficult to fall asleep. Of course, Lewis is also a huge proponent of removing electronics from the bedroom. “Having them in the bedroom as you’re going to sleep keeps the mind activated.” She advises that you replace the screens in your room with artwork and photos to produce a less stimulating, more calming effect. Feng shui has been used for thousands of years, so why not take a cue from this tradition to create your most relaxing possible bedroom?
