Ever spend hours cleaning your closet just to find yourself cleaning it again a month later?
You sort through all the mess and no matter how much stuff you actually own, it feels like you never have anything to wear! Or if you’re like me, you have a million items of clothing, but end up using the same two things. Let’s face it: cleaning your closet is a never-ending task. But, what if we organized it in a way that made our lives easier? If you want to spend less time going through your clothes and more time in them, here are some simple tips on organizing your closet.
Store Small Items in a Makeup Vanity
Vanities are great to store smaller objects such as jewelry and accessories. They give your closet a stylish touch while keeping those items in a safe and organized place. You can place it in a corner so you can utilize all of your closet space. To maximize its use, you can even stack some heels underneath it!
Organize Your Clothes by Category
To make your clothes easier to find, try arranging them by category! This will also help you minimize your likelihood of making a mess. We tend to get disorganized when we are looking for things and have to go through everything to find it. Having everything grouped together in front of you also makes it easier for sorting through and getting rid of stuff you have too much of or never use.
The Rule of One In, One Out
My rule of thumb is: one in, one out! For every piece of clothing you purchase, get rid of one in your closet. This way, you don’t have too much of everything. Having less is sometimes best. This also allows you to stay mindful of what you have in your closet before you go shopping for more. Try using what you already have and making different outfits out of it! You’d be surprised to see how many combinations you can actually make. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and get creative!
Make the Most of Your Dresser
Hadley Mendelsohn has good tips on making your space feel bigger. She suggests moving your dresser inside your closet. That is, if you’re fortunate to have a closet large enough for one!
I love this idea because it allows you to have everything within arm’s reach, without taking stuff out of your closet and trying it on somewhere else in the bedroom. Having the dresser in your closet also allows you to put things back right away.
If you don’t have a closet or bedroom large enough for a dresser, I suggest you look into getting a storage bed! Storage beds are a great solution to storing and organizing your clothes without giving up any of your bedroom space.
Incorporate Dresser Tip to Your Kid’s Closet
Dressers are also a great way to organize kids closets. Keeping a child’s room organized is a whole other issue. Wouldn’t you agree? But, we can apply the same above tips to their closets in order to keep them organized longer.
Dressers are great because children can use them too (if you place them within reach). You can designate a category for each drawer with appropriate stickers as shown above. Kids learn visually, so this is an easy technique to show them how to stay organized. It’s never too early to share your tips with them!
