Nobody thinks it can happen to them until it does: the dreaded bed bug infestation. These nasty little critters love nothing more than hitching a ride in your luggage or clothing and taking up residence in your bedroom. They can go for months without feeding and females can lay up to five eggs per day. So what do you do if they find their way into you bedroom?
First, you’ll want to hire an exterminator. If you can see and feel the bed bugs, there are more than enough of them to warrant hiring a pro. In the meantime, grab a flashlight and a credit card and peer into your mattress’s seams. Attack them with a vacuum cleaner equipped with a crevice attachment and ditch the sealed bag far from anywhere people live. Bed bugs also like to shack up in books, shoes, and even laptops. Bedding, clothing, and more can be tossed into a dryer set to at least 115 degrees Fahrenheit, while smaller items can be frozen to kill off the pests. You can also protect yourself against bed bugs by zipping your mattress and box spring into bug-proof covers to keep them from hiding in the cracks.
