Carpet beetles can get into a home in a number of ways: hitching rides on flowers, clothing, or pets, for example. Once inside, they’ll settle in, lay their eggs, and proceed to ruin your rugs, carpet, upholstery, and even your clothing. How can you rid yourself of these pests?
Carpet beetles are small, less than a quarter inch long, and either black or some combination of tan, black, and white. They also congregate around windows and doorways, so check those areas first if you suspect you have an infestation. The adult beetles themselves are harmless; it’s their larvae that do the damage. These tiny, worm-like creatures hide in dark areas, making them difficult to spot. The best solution is to do a clean sweep: dust and vacuum your home thoroughly, and launder any damaged or infested items that you find. You can also treat carpet and upholstery with an insecticide, though you should be careful not to use one that can cause harm to you, your kids, or your pets. Boric acid might be the safest solution; you can buy it at a pharmacy, spread it on your carpet, and vacuum it up a few hours later. Carpet beetles are a pain, but you can get rid of them yourself if you catch them soon enough and take the right precautions!
