Want to get more sleep? Science is on your side. There are many ill health effects linked to a lack of sleep, and to poor quality sleep. People are advised to get between seven and eight hours of sleep each night, yet over 40% of the US gets less than that. What happens if you’re not getting enough sleep?
The effects are numerous, and none of them are pleasant. People who don’t get enough sleep are more susceptible to getting colds and are at a higher risk of stomach and gastrointestinal troubles like acid reflux. Lack of sleep has even been attributed to a higher risk of headaches and migraines. Poor sleep can also lead to weight gain thanks to a tendency to snack more when we’re tired. The psychological effects aren’t any more pleasant, either. A lack of sleep interferes with our ability to process and remember new information, making it difficult to learn. It can also cause irritability and mood swings. The lesson? Put a priority on getting a good night’s sleep. A comfy bed and a cozy bedroom won’t only make your sleeping experience more pleasant, it will also make you a happier, healthier person!
